I am buying a 1993 Chaparral 2500 sx with the 7.4 L engine. Is this a problem engine? Why was it discontinued after only 4 years? Will appreciate any input. Thanks, David.

Is yours a Mercruiser? Got 1298 hours on my all origional '92 7.4L Bravo 1 Chap 2550 SX Sport. Curious why you state the 7.4L was used for only 4 years, as it has been used by Merc for a long, long time, and still is, in a few variations.

The 7.4L (454 CI) is the big block Chevy motor that has been used forever and comes in many variations, up to 500+ cubic inches. I have zero problems w/ the motor itself, just the stuff hanging off of it, as it's 20 years old and things break.

Re: Reliability of mercruiser 7.4 l

Mr. o4fxdwigi,

Thank you for your comments. I got the idea about 4 years because the NADA boat price guide only listed 5.0, 5.7, and 8.2 litre engines with a sidenote that for 1993 thru 1997 model years to use the 5.7 even if the boat had a 7.4 litre. [?] I thought that was strange, but well, OK. Secondly Mercruiser's own site only gave info about 3.0, 4.3, 5.0, 5.7, 8.2 litre engines with no mention of a 7.4 ! Almost like they were embarrassed by it. At that point I'm getting nervous. So I posted the question. Later, after visiting a dozen more sites, I came across the mention that GM had cut back production of the 7.4 and moved the line to a smaller plant to make room for producing the new 6.2 GM engine at the plant where the 7.4 had been made. Then cutting back supply of the 7.4 [454] to the marine industry in favor of shipping most of them to automotive applications. I began to feel better knowing there was a reason Merc reduced the use of the 7.4. Believe me, I know the 454 block has been around a long time and is bulletproof in autos. This 2500 sx I'm buying is absolutely in mint condition cosmetically [can't tell it from new] and I thought why would anyone want to sell it unless there was some underlying expensive mechanical issue. I guess I'm just overly suspicious. This engine will get excellent care under my watch, and thank you for easing my mind. Regards, David.

The 454 was also used by Mercruiser from 77 to 01. Then GM replaced it with the 496 and 502.

Here is a list of the different models Merc used the 454 block in.
