I'm in the process of trying to find a used outboard for my 19 ft Reinell to use for fishing in the sound. What I would like to know if there are some older engines that were really reliable that I should watch for and possibly certain models to avoid. I dont want this to be Merc/Evinrude/Yama flame fest . I was thinking 75hp-150hp range.

Things Id like input on ,is reliability and ease of operation and upkeep.I have lots of time to pick one but wouldnt mind some input from some veteran boaters that have been around the block.

A Yamaha mid-range(50 to 90HP) carbed, 2 stroke, premix that's been well-maintained could make you a good reliable motor. That's my 30+years of Yamaha Outboard Motor experience. Good Luck!

Re: Reliable old engines

welcome to iboats :) I too am a "free" boater and have spent just about as much as yourself. I have a 71' chrysler. Hard to find parts for, but otherwise reliable. After a carb cleaning and tune up, it runs really well...

Mid to late 80s Evinrudes/Johnsons are pretty bullit proof as long as you get one that was taken care of, once you get into the 90 you hit the FICHT engines and they just aren't that good anymore but the mid 80s and older are probably the best engines made.

Can't argue with Yamaha either, the only thing with them is parts could be a probelm if you don't have a dealer close.
