Relocate a non working fuel guage??

I've got a 1980 22' Aquasport and the fuel guage is in the middle of the deck under a small hatch. It doesn't seem to be working. I was wondering if anyone has ever relocated a guage like that or has any knowledge of how the thing works. The folks at Aquasport don't seem to have much time for people unless they're buying a new Aquasport. Any help is much appreciated.

i don't see why you can't just replace the sending unit, guage and wiring all at once and know everyhthing is new and reliable. sounds simple. it must be!

Yo Fla - I suspect you are looking at the tank sending unit for a dash mounted fuel guage. Some sending units also have a sight guage built in - mine has anyway. If your is this way it will have two terminals for leads to the guage on the console. In any case dan is right - it is a simple deal to replace both the sending unit and the guage or just to add a guage..

Most boat manufacturers do not make the tanks for their boats. Look for a data plate from the manufacturer on the tank. It will tell you the capacity and the manufacturer and you can call and get the right sender & guage for your boat. If the data plate is not there go to a marine supply place & get a generic set. The mounting holes for the sender are an industry standard. I bought mine from the manufacturer last year as I wanted to be sure I get as good a reading as possible for my tank.

hey fla,

just another tidbit for ya... if it is a gauge in dash setup, the sending units are specifac to the gauge manufacturer, whether VDO, Faria, etc. some read 10-180ohms, some read 240-33ohms, etc.. one wont work properly with the other..

There's not a gauge on the dash, only in the deck. I have to pop open a round hatch and there's a gauge inside there. It doesn't work and I'm not sure if the sending unit is incorporated in the gauge or if it's seperate. In order to look into it, I have to pull up a floor panel thats about 4' by 6' so I haven't gone that far yet. I may be able to just remove the gauge but I didn't want to risk screwing something up. Thanks for the replies fellas.

You can buy the whole setup as a kit from here or Boatus. It comes with a sending unit and guage, just replace the unit and run a single wire to the new guage you mount and give it 12v. pretty simple, i bet the guage kit comes with instructions.

Bought the kit, installed the sending unit, ran the line, installed the guage. Works perfect. Thanks for the help guys.
