I just had 2 re-manufactured 8.1's installed by a qualified Mercruiser mechanic. This past weekend I noticed that the port engine was missing at times. I took it easy on the engine running about 3600rpms. All of a sudden alarm went off, oil pressure went to 10 lbs. I went into idle since I was just getting ready to go into my marina. When I got back into the marina I checked in the bilge and motor oil was all over the place. I filled it with 7 qts. Called my mechanic who came down the next day. Found that oil had blown out of the dipstick. He used scan tool and a camera to look in low output cylinder. Found piston was burnt. Corner melted. Had a "smiley face". Cylinder wall was scratched. Checked other cylinders. Found another one. At no time did my temp gauge go above normal nor did the engine go into protection mode. Previous to installing the reman's I had all injectors rebuilt. One new one had to be bought, not able to be rebuilt.
I guess my question is, What could have caused this? I know that for this to happen there had to be enormous heat generated. Preignition or detonation destroyed the piston. I heard no knocking, all plugs were almost new, fuel is fine. My marina sells a lot of it. My other engine is fine. Genset uses it and it is fine. I hope I don't have to battle with Mercruiser or my mechanic about this. Just don't know what to do. $$$$$$$
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Why are you doing anything? Take it back to the dealer that installed it and let them deal with Merc. At this point you don't even know if you have a problem to worry about.

Like Don said . . .

Were the re-man's from Mercruiser/Quicksilver or another company.

I think that re-manufactured engines are a crap-shoot, as it is a judgement call on the 'rebuildable' condition of the original engine.

I can tell you for a fact than no one here can say if you are going to have a problem or not, but if you don't take it back to them you are never going to find out either.

I have sent your question to the more gifted.

your first sentence should clear you of any issues, take it back and let him deal with it. i'd assume they have some sort of warranty on reman's that should cover you in 15hrs...plus with a merc mechanic performing the work they can't really blame it on you as he would have made the call on replacing/rebuilding parts such as your injectors. I could see injectors causing the issue if the cylinder was running very lean

Not all Mercruiser qualified mechanics work for authorized Mercruiser dealers. If the injectors were givng a problem on the old engine and reconditioned did the same mechanic install the reman engines? If 2 mechanics were involved, then the finger pointing "may" begin, for your sake I hope not. Good luck.

Kind of a dead issue really, the OP hasn't even been back to the forums since August 16th.
