Remote control Start lever popping up

I have one of the OMC remote controls that has the little spring loaded steel balls to lock the start lever down. I think the case is a little worn as it is 23 years old.

But it is a pain because it pops up just enough to prevent shifting. If I hold it down I can shift fine but it makes docking a bit akward.

I know some have more of a hook latch but not this one.

Anyone have a reliable fix? Is it possible to had the hook latch lever?

Have you got the throttle cable adjusted properly, if the cable is a little short it can cause your problem.

Actually I think the throttle cable is a little short and binds a bit so I was thinking of replacing them. The shifter cable is quite a bit longer than the throttle.

But to add to that, all the diagrams I found show a latch and hook OMC parts 0331048 and 0331050. I have the threaded holes to mount them but not the parts. Unfortunately 0331048 is obsolete.

Look at the top of the page in the "Top Secret File" sticky, there is a list of salvage yards there, I bet one of them can help you out.
I meant that you throttle cable might be adjusted a little short. Remove the cable from the throttle lever on the engine, make sure the shifter is in neutral and the cold start lever is all the way down. Adjust the knurled knob on the cable so that the cable end will slip on to the pin for the throttle lever.

Found 3 shops with the obsolete part using the list in the secret file. 2 were still asking the normal price. One was about 3 times the list price.

Just because the part is obsolete, don't think you are going to get it cheaper than new price, usually you have to pay more if you want it.

wasn't expecting a deal. I've owned british sports cars my whole life and well understand the effect of obsolescence on aparts price. Heck a good late 70's Spitfire hazard light can bring $200. And I have 2 stored away from junk yard hunts.

I was merely reporting the results of the search. I was actually suprised that 2 of the three WERE selling at or below the list price.

The lesson being get a few responses.

BTW I did find a guy in Australia with several for sell on EBay but he only ships to Australia.
