My sailboat came with a 2005 8hp 4-stroke elect. Merc that used the tiller to control both shift and throttle. It was awkward to operate the engine because of its location. Trying to get the needed remote control parts conversion from Mercury dealers was virtually impossible.
I took a chance and ordered the remote controls from Tohatsu (they made the motor) but was stymied because of Mercury's exclusive twist-shift tiller setup. I managed to salvage the Tohatsu parts (which cost about half of what Mercury branded parts do) by first converting the engine to Tohatsu's separate shift and throttle setup, (about $65 worth of stuff) then installing my Tohatsu remote controls, which now work fine.
If anyone else is interested in installing remote controls on Mercury's newer (2005 and up) 8, 9.9 and Big Foot motors, let me know and I'll dig up and post all the Tohatsu part numbers needed for the conversion.
