remote controls for evinrude

I have a 1989 Tracker 16' Deep-V with a 9.9 Evinrude with remote. I am thinking about replacing this motor. Do I have to stay with Evinrude/Johnson to keep my orginal remote and cables or can I switch to another brand outboard? Also will a 2002 evinrude outboard work with my 1989 remote. Thanks Gary.

Gary -- Best to check out the control unit that comes with the newer motor if you can to make sure the older one would be compatible. I have a '90 Yachtwin that I may convert to remote, and I think the late '80s through mid-90s units will work, and maybe later ones. By the way, if you decide to sell the old controls with or without the '89 motor, I might be interested -- controls should work on mine, and could always use the 9.9 for a parts motor or backup.
