Remote oil filter on 4.3. improper/no flow

Hi. I'm having a problem with oil flow through my remote oil filter on a 1999 Mercruiser 4.3. The filter does not get hot when the oil is hot. I changed the filter and removed the hoses and oil in pumping through both hoses. I assume this is preventing circulation through the filter. This is a newly installed remanufactured engine but the remote kit was removed from the previous 1996 4.3 and reinstalled. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello robmleggett, and :welcome: aboard.

You may have the hoses around the wrong way...

Chris.......

Either the hoses are flipped, or the bypass in the block is wrong PSI for remote oil filter

Thanks Scott. I Suspected flipped hoses so I disconnected the and a turned over engine until I saw oil pumping through. That's when I noticed oil was pumping through both hoses. Where is the bypass located? Is it accessable?

you wouldnt have oil pumping thru both hoses. you may have back flow, however oil would only pump in one direction.

oil bypass is in the adapter bolted to the block

That's what I would have thought too. It definitely was flowing from both hoses. One was a little stronger than the other so I hooked that one up to the side with the arrow pointing in to my filter and the result was the same.
I think I going to remove the adapter and put a filter on in its place until I can get the adapter checked out. Thos will be a royal pain but when I dropped the oil with only 16 hours on the engine, it was black as soot so I really want to make sure I"m getting good filtration.
I flushed the engine with engine flush and new oil and will refill with mercruiser oil and run another 20 hours. Hopefully by then I'll have the remote adapter working properly and reconnect.

Ayuh,..... A filter won't just screw onto the block, it takes a different adapter,.....

You're kidding me, right? I took the adapter off, cleaned and couldn't see anything wrong but can't really tell if the two valves are any good. I can't find the parts either. So, I'm dead in the water?

order the right components (specifically the higher pressure bypass for use with remote filters)

install the components

then plumb correctly
