Remote Start Switch

I need to turn the engine over with a remote start switch to attain compression stroke TDC. This is on a 1984 GM 140 3.0L Mercruiser. The instructions on the switch say to connect one clip to positive battery terminal and the other to energizing terminal of solenoid. Which terminal on the solenoid is the energizing? Do I have to have the key in the on position? I clipped one connection on the yellow/red wire on the right side of the solenoid and got a click when pushing the button, but no turns. Thanks for any response.

If were talking about the starters solenoid, the small lug closest to the engine and the main batt cable lug.
If you mean at the slave, the large Yellow/red and the large Red wires

Thanks for your response. Yes, it is the starter solenoid; and I had to turn the battery on to have it actually turn the crank. Finally got everything lined up; it wanted to turn past TDC... Thought it would be a problem attempting to turn backwards, near impossible anyway, but the water pump impeller may be affected as well. Never having used a remote switch before, I sure didn't want to fry anything in the process. Every process, another lesson. Appreciate your post Bt Doctur.

pull the plugs, you can then grab the belts and turn a 3.0 over. just watch your thumbs around the pulleys

It's almost impossible to use the starter to find TDC. If you happen to hit it, the compression 99 times out of a 100 will push the piston piston down the bore. Pulling the plugs and using the starter is still difficult because the motor will be spinning faster. Use the belt method Scott described, it's foolproof.

Mine hates to be turned by anything but the starter, nothing like the four cylinders I've wrestled with before. But it has trained me to do the job with patience (mine) and time, using the switch and three hands... Thanks for the tips and response!
