Remote Temperature Sensor

I have a vacation home up in Lake Tahoe that I rent out. I leave the heater on at 55 to keep the house warm enough to keep the pipes from freezing in the winter but I am thinking it would be wise to have a temperature sensor that I could hook up to the router up there and access it remotely over the internet.

Anyone have or used anything like this?

Re: Remote Temperature Alarm

You mean to monitor the temp or to adjust the temp?
If there is no power, your SOL
If the furnace has run out of fuel your SOL
Unless you can use the monitor to see if the fuel ran out and you need a delivery? But then you need to get a re-light unless it is a newer furnace?

They do make a temperature and power sensative dump valve that will open to drain the house and turn the water off upstream.

Re: Remote Temperature Sensor

The main reason I need this is to make sure renters didn't turn off the heater completely or that the heater failed to light for some reason. Once I detect a low temperature, I can have friends that live up there go see what's wrong. It takes a few days for something actually bad to happen because it takes mutiple days of night time temps in the teens or lower to cause a freeze problem

Re: Remote Temperature Sensor

We run these in our office & data center to keep an eye on temps & humidity. Our company's owner bought one to monitor his lake cottage in NH. They're really simple & work great for monitoring.

Might be a bit pricey for what you want, but they've been rock solid and scripting some graphs for them is easy. I noticed they also have a simpler model that just does temps:

The fact they are network-ready with built-in web servers is nice.

Several less than $100.
Some you can call in to see if all is well.

Good stuff jeeperman...I have been looking for a system for my vacation home also and here is a link to what I picked out for mine.

Thanks for the link.

I really like this:
http://www.diycontrols.com/p-5989-bayweb-internet-thermostat-white.aspx

This will monitor temps as well as be a remote controlled thermostat. I have had a few incidents where renters left and had the heat blasting which cost me a lot in natural gas. The more I read about this thermostat, the more I realize it will probably pay for itself after awhile. Its also very reasonably priced.
