Remote throttle for kicker

I have a 1956 Johnson Seahorse 5.5hp cd-13. It has been in the family since 1960.

I would like to use this motor as a kicker on my Bass Tracker V17 for the horsepower limited lakes that we have around here. I already have the Seahorse connected to the main engine for steering but, I would like a way to control speed also.

Are there controls that work on any of the other models that would convert over well for this model? Or are there any aftermarket controls that would work?

Thanks.

Re: Remote throttle for kicker

that's a good question, my manual does not show throttle linkage. Ok blue mark on the picture, throttle joint, if there is a nub, for the cable to connect to, it can be done.

There is a nub!
Would a remote set up from another model possibly work? I don't have any other models to compare to, so I can't tell.
Maybe an after market kit?

This may not be the best view (lower right ) but it is an old Morse unit. It works just fine. My son and I troll Lake Michigan and the speed control very precise. There are Gale units on ebay that will work also. You just need to have the proper couplers to mate up to the motor.

Thanks burroak!
Thats what I am looking to do. My boat is decked front and back so the kicker controls will be further forward, just behind the main controls.

I think that the problem you will have with that motor is lack of a mounting boss for the the shift lock bracket (small stainless steel bracket that holds the shift cable at the trunion). The later 6hp models don't have one either but there is a bracket (couldn't find the part number) that can be mounted to the starboard side of the motor to accomodate this bracket. You can simply drill holes in the side of the cowling to mount a shift lock bracket but the shift cable will not line up properly because the shift handle sticks out from the edge of the cowling a bit. You might be able to make the bracket for the 6hp that I just mentioned work.

This one on ebay will work.

TD, the "double S," stainless steel bracket is not what I am talking about. The later 6hp model had an aluminum bracket, onto which the SS item is fastened. The aluminum piece is held to the motor by a machine screw (or screws, I don't remember) and serves to create a mounting spot that is about an inch or so to the side of the motor. This neccessary to keep the shift cable aligned in a fore/aft direction, relative to the motor.

I will take a pic of one and post it a bit later .... got to go pick up the tyke in a minute.

Jay you are correct. it basically firs out the mount so the cable is straight with the shift lever. you could possible do it with a 1/2 3/4 inch block, bolting the SS bracket and wood to the motor.

Here is the bracket that I spoke of - it is bolted onto the lower cowl piece with a single machine screw and nut.
