remote wiring harness for 1971 evinrude 25hp

i have found out that the connector from the boat side harness is defective(part#385158), the motor side of this connector is fine(part#385157), i have no problems building my own harness however i would like to leave the motor harness in the motor and connect to it in a different way, how would the smart people of iboats handle this problem?
