Key.
Battery or plug wires.
Prop.
Shiftshaft.
Trim tab.
6(?) bolts.

The process is a little more complicated than just pulling it of, putting it back on, and hoping all works.
A repair manual is vital if you are going to be working on this type of motor.

You will need to know the proper assembly, torque #'s, tips and tricks, what to grease and what NOT to grease, and which parts to check/replace, or which parts are missing.

All this can be found in a manual. A factory manual is best, but this one should work:

http://www.iboats.com/mall/index.cgi?prod_id=25200&current_category=mercury manual&cart_id=128877326

Re: Remove Mercury lower unit

I removed 2 nuts on either side and 1 nut towards the rear. The rear seems free but the front of the unit seems attached to something. A little help please and thanks. harry3

Some motors have the shift shaft as just a push-in fit and others you have to disconnect it and also remove the speedo tube. After ascertaining what type you have, just loosen the nuts, but leave them on the bolts so it does not come crashing down. Use somthing soft like a rubber mallet or wood block to strike the cav plate. It may be just the drive shaft corroded into the crankshaft.

I remove the prop so it is lighter and easier to handle the lower unit.
It is also easier to grip the lower unit when sliding it back on.

Gotcha..
And.. it's a good idea to remove, grease, replace periodically anyway. ;)
