Hey all, I recently acquired an old aluminum Starcraft from my father in law. He had already gutted everything, including the windsheild and whatever else their once was. I want to restore it as much as I can, maybe not putting the windshield and all back, but you know... Anyway, step one is getting the paint off. I've used some aircraft remover for some of it but it just does not seem to work well. It bubbles up all right, but it will take a ton to do all this boat. Is there another way? Is there something I can put on my drill that will sand it off without eating into the aluminum? Or should I just keep using the remover to get most everything off, then use the drill to finish it up? I think it is a sixteen footer, and it has a mercury 402 on it that has been rigged with a piece of rebar for a tiller handle ...I know...the motor is sound, but the external wiring harness fell apart, so I need to rewire the harness, but the new ignition switches won't fit in a mercontrol lbox, so i guess I'll be mounting a new ignition switch, and buying a new bow for the shift and throttle. I've heard the uflex ones are good for shift and throttle...Anyway, I feel better now after getting all that off my chest. I need to do this one step at a time, but the next thing after the paint, is to order a new ignition switch and wire it into the external wiring harness so I can actually start the engine. It is a five post ignition switch, and I have the wring schematics from the motor to the ignition and the choke. Whew- I have to stop rambling..any advice on anything is appreciated LOL. :p I'm glad to be here!

Re: Remove paint from old aluminum Starcraft

Hi, I used a orbital sander with 120 grit and about 19 hours to get mine ready for paint. You can check out the pics in my resto thread. Good luck and welcome aboard. Also you will need to post pics and the Starcraft Crazies:D will come out of the woodwork to help!
