I have a 1998 Force 120 and am having problems at high rpm w/buzzer going off. I have replaced the impellor. Is it ok to run without the thermostat? Im not sure if this will help the problem,I just dont want to try if it can fry the engine. As long as water is coming from the pee-hole does this mean the engine is ok? Thanks for any help.

I am pretty sure it will be fine without it, some motors don't even have a t-stat. I believe the purpose of a stat is just to let the engine warm up faster, not positive though.

My 85 Force ran for I don't know how long without a thermostat. At least 3 years. However, I recommend running the motor with a thermo installed. A cold 2 stroke is a not friendly to it's internal wear surfaces. Most thermo's can be bought for less then 30 bucks. 30 bucks for extra 1000 or so hours before rebuild. Much more economic to rebuild in 2000 or 3000 hours of use then 750 or 1000. Plus...they usually can be installed in less then 10 minutes.

You need the thermostat, otherwise your motor can cold seize as we call it, if the metal around the cylender cools down to quick because of no thermostat to keep the water constant in those areas and when the pistons are really hot, it wil crack your pistons cause the sleeves are cooling down too fast and cause cold seizure .... remember it is there for a reason and cheap to replace .... the older engines that originally don't have thermostats were designed to not need it .....

You need the thermostat in there to create the back pressure the impellar needs to maintain good flow/pressure and assure water gets to the top of the engine. The best insurance you can have is to install a water pressure gauge with the tube connected at the pipe plug next to the thermostat housing. Then, you can always be sure you are getting good water pressure at the top and most critical part of the engine. My Force 150, after installing a new impellar, will get as high as 20# at WOT and at idle it runs around 7#.
