Removed the wrong plug!!!

i just recently purchased a OMC 5.0 cobra and was checking the lower unit out. I removed the plug on the side of the unit you know the one your not supposed too! Well after trying for about an hour to get the plug started back on the threads i believe it has fallen further down the opening inside out of reach. my qeustion is, If i plug this hole could this little nut cause me any serious problems in the future other than possably causing the engine to run hotter?

P.S. This plug is actually a drain for the water pump. it has nothing to do with the shifting or cooling. i was told it was only a drain. but he wasn't sure what would it cause by leaving inside

Did you remove the drive to get access to the plug? That's going to be the only way you are going to get to it.

do you know of any tricks or advise that would be helpful when removing the unit? iv'e look around but can't seem to find anything on removing it. i am alittle nervious about it just because i haven't done it before. like does it matter what gear it's in?, should i go ahead and prepare to replace certain things while i have it off?, ect.

If you get yourself an OEM service manual, you will find all that info.

If you try running it with that nut-plate in there it could block the water discharge to the engine and cause an overheat.
