I spent hours looking to see if anyone had removed the motor with removing the outdrive. That is with the boat still in the water.

I could not find anything, but I had gone thru the outdrive when I had the boat out doing the bottom and I could not see how water could get in the boat just by pulling the motor. The exhaust y-pipe and the inlet hose was the only way I could see.

So I made some steps to get the water out if it did come in and started taking the motor out.
I stripped the it down to the short block and then separated it from the outdrive "bellhousing" from the motor. No problem.

The oil pump had locked up and lost a couple of rods, the block, but the crank may be turned. I have another motor but a later model which has a different external balance weight so I have to work out how to go about coming up with the right parts to make everything work.

But, you can pull the motor only from a Penta 280 outdrive.

Definitely can bud. Just put some fernco caps over the exhaust Y-pipes (Which water shouldn't be coming up that high anyways, but just for good measure) and put a plug into your raw water intake hose.

That's the only two places that water comes into the boat from the 280. Raw water hose, and exhaust y-pipe.

Third place: the shift cable hose.
Forth place: the rubber donut where the tail of the bell housing goes through the transom. If the hose is cocked a little it can let water in.

My "guess" would be the Y-pipe seal.
