Removing carburetor from Johnson

I have an '85 Johnson 8 HP with idle problems. Process of elimination indicates that the problem lies in the carb and I would like to remove this for cleaning and possible fitting of new kit if this is required. Removing the top section of the carb proved simple, as did undoing one of the nuts that connects the main body to the engine. However, I am unable to undo the other nut because of its close proximity to the cord start/rewind mechanism. I can get a spanner onto the nut but there is insufficient room to turn it. <br />I assume I will have to remove the starter mechanism....would appreciate any advice from some of you experienced guys before I do this and maybe have bits of spring and cord flying all over the garage.
