I need to pull the engine from my '92 Infinity Bowrider. It has the Mercruiser Alpha 1 i/o and the 5.0 engine. Can I pull the engine while leaving the drive intact? Do I have to do anything outside the boat, or just undo the motor mounts and pull it? What is the procedure for pulling the motor out?

Preciate the help!

Re: Removing engine

That manual does not give directions for removing the engine... only the sterndrive... doesn't help much:(

Re: Removing engine

Make sure and put in forward gear before trying to slide the leg off.

Ditto on the alignment bar.

Re: Removing engine

I have heard of people having to remove the engine while trying to replace the gimbal bearing because the shaft wouldnt slide out of the bearing. They pulled the engine and beat the shaft from the inside.... How did they pull the motor with the drive unit still on????

Ok, it's possible to pull the engine with drive still in.

It's unlikely one would be able to reinstall the engine properly with the drive still on. If for no other reason that the gimbal bearing needs to be aligned.

Once you have the drive off it's pretty straight forward to remove the engine.

Re: Removing engine

I just did this procedure a few weeks ago. The manual is def a good investment. To help you tonight though I would suggest taking the outdrive off. It makes removing the engine a lot easier as well as allows you to check the billows while you are in there. There are only 4 bolts that hold the engine in place on the mounts. Make sure to remove all of the cables attaching to the engine as well as the main wire harness. Fairly easy to get out after that. Be sure to get the engine aligned once it is back in and before putting in the outdrive. If you don;t have the proper tool call around to marinas they will be able to do this for you. It only cost me $40 which is a lot cheaper than having to replace the gimble bearing after it gets messed up. Take your time and have patience.

Re: Removing engine

You need manual #14 for removing the outdrive and other outdrive/transomshielsd/ trim repairs.
Your engine manual will be #15 (FREE not 30 bucks) and section 2A page 2 covers removal of the engine.
Don't waste your money with Seloc manuals, you will only be dissapointed and then have to buy the OEM.

Re: Removing engine

AH HA!!! Got that sucker out! The only casualty was the little ground wire that ran from the back of the motor the the stern drive assembly... A crimp connector will fix that though.

On a not so good note... got access to a lot more of the transom, tapped it with a hammer, and its definately rotted. Ill add that to the list of things to do...

Thanks for the help!

heres a pic of my hoist:D
