I am restoring a 1963 Starcraft Fiesta as I have said in a previous post and I have transom questions. I know a first. LOL Seriously, I have spent days and nights pouring over this forum looking for answers but cannot find one that solves my problem. I had first thought of ordering seacast, then a seacast type material from a fiberglass supplier who assured me that I would have the same results for about half the money. However I have decided to go with would. Part of the reason is that I have over 2100 cubic inches of transom space to fill. Anyway, I have determined from all of my searching that replacing the transom from the inside out is the best way. My kids and I removed the top from the boat today and I attempted to gouge out the wood with a chainsaw. I guess I was still toying with the idea of pouring in a new transom but now I just want to cut it out and replace with wood. My problem is how my transom is attached to the rest of the hull. Not only is it attached to the stringers but to the side stringers? for lack of knowing the right terminology. As you can see in a close up of the corner of my transom I cant just cut close to the hull all the way around these side things but directly up against the stringers and also there is a trapezoid shaped plate type thing glassed in that seems to be what ties into the hull for strength. How do I cut this interior out and attach a new transom. I thought about cutting out about six inches all the way around the inside and then gouging out the rest of the old transom with my chainsaw, then dropping in a new transom based on a pattern from the outside then reglassing in the inner skin possibly screwing the trapezoid things directly to the new transom. If you guys wouldn't mind take a look at my pics and let me know what you think.
