I removed the 4 bolt holding the lower unit on and I removed the double threaded nut connecting the gear shift rods and the unit still does not drop. I'm I missing something? I tried using moderate persuasion but I am afraid I will break something.
What should I do?

Dunno if this is your issue but the clymers manual mentions " some " 20's " you have to remove the cotter pin from the shift rod,

also to remove the exhaust snout on one piece gearcase models and remove the acrew and lockwasher

*You need to add the year and model# so we can make sure we're fixing the right one???
They made the 20hp in 5 different years. 78-82
The lower unit was changed during that time.
Tassie's instructions are for the later models.

The older: if you remove all the screws and linkage and it still doesn't drop?
Then the splines on top of the driveshaft might be seized???

Some force might be needed??
