removing lower unit

I am trying to replace a water pump (my first time).<br />I have everything loose but the shifter rod .The rod will not come off with lower unit because it has a angle to it.I loosened the bolt at top of rod already. How do I get it off?Ive already dropped the lower unit but the rod is the hold up.ANY ADVICE?<br />-------1977 70 hp evinrude-------

There is a tapered screw that goes through the shift rod and it is located on the port side under the bottom carb. You need to remove that screw.
