removing lower unit

was gonna take off lower unit and check my impeller to try to fix my water leak, do I need to drain lower unit before removing?

No, just pull the bolts on the cav plate and exhaust and pull er off.

Don't forget to coat the shaft splines and shaft itself with a good quality marine grease to prevent corrosion and galling.

Do the same for the bolts and torque them with a torque wrench. You are torquing stainless steel bolts into aluminum and you don't want to strip the threads or snap off a bolt.

If you have a water leak you should check your lower unit oil by draining it. A small price to pay now to avoid an expensive repair down the road. But yes you should be able to remove the lower unit with out draining it.
