I have 1991 Mercruiser 4.3 with Alpha I Gen II. Do I have to pull the whole outdrive to change my impellar or can I just pull the lower off by itself?

I think you can just pull off the lower unit. I've only changed one before on a Mercury outboard. It was pretty simple.

Do you need Service Manual #6? It covers Alpha I, but I'm not sure if Gen II is covered. Mercury has removed all the .pdf service manuals, but I got my two before this happened. The sticky at the top of this "Mercruiser, OMC, Volvo &...." forum used to have links to all the manuals.

While it is possible to pull just the lower, it's really not in your best interest to do so. The drive should be pulled every 100 hrs, or yearly (which ever comes first. To check an lube the ujoints, gimbal bearing (Clean up the old grease and feel the bearing) to check for water and/or gear lube in the bellows and to check the alignment. Then, while the drive is off change the impeller.

He needs manual #14, and you really need to go check the links again nate. Those manual links are all available again.

I checked u-joints and gimbal etc when I pulled the motor a week ago, but forgot to change impellar at the time. Ive got all the nuts and bolts off the lower unit now but it doesnt seem to want to come apart. Is there something Im missing or does it need a little persuasion.
