Trying to rebuild the carburetors on a 1984 Mercury 90hp, 6 cylinder. I have tried to remove the external brass plugs and also the main jet, but they are frozen. I have tried the appropriate size screw drivers, but have not success. One of the jets looks pretty bad now. Any suggestions?

Another question is about the plastic components on the carburetor, do they really have to come off before soaking the carb in carb cleaner? The black nibbles that connect are connected to the electric choke don't come off either. Any suggestions?
Thanks,

There's a special tool for removing the jets. A screwdriver will usuallywork but there is a tool for that. Worse case scenario is drilling the orficii out or replacing the carburetor body. I wouldn't put the plastic parts in carb cleaner. I'd clean 'em with hot, soapy water, a fiber bristle brush and compressed air.

c/6
Hooty

there is a reaon that the bottle says" DO NOT PUT PLASTIC, RUBBER OR GASKETS IN SOLUTION" IT ALSO EATS YOUR SKIN.... IF YOU SOAK the carbs good enough, you shouldnt have to remove them . unless your building a new motor and need to increase jet size..... i had same problem... best to just leav in the carb and soake it over night, and that lil rubber thing DOES come out....

mikey :p
