I'm trying to remove the bolt inside the trim tab cover however I'm not sure what size it is. I hope it is SAE size. In addition, it appears it is a nut vice bolt. Could it be I should be removing the bolt from behind what appears a synthetic cover on the exterior just above it. In short, how do I remove this 5th bolt? Any help would be greatly appreciated.:(

You mean the nut with the plastic cover over it on the very rear of the lower unit?

Re: Removing Mercury 50 HP Lower Unit

I'm going to just throw this out as I know not what you have. I recollect having a "hex socket screw" somewhere back there, and not on that HP engine; I had different sizes. It had a round external surface, not hex like a regular hex-head bolt or a hex nut would have. The wrench fits down into the head of the screw, hence "hex socket screw". It may have been the screw holding the trim tab in place. To access it, you pop a plastic/nylon cover on the top rear of the midsection and look down into the hole where the cover mounted where you could see this screw.

On removing the 5th bolt on engines having one if similar to this, you do what I just mentioned, removing the trim tab, then looking up from the underside of the antivent plate, into the hole that the trim tab covered, you can see the 5th bolt.

Does that make any sense? Hope so.
