Hi everyone!

I have to take out a totaly rusted AQ170 on a 280 outdrive, but it won't go out. It seems that the main shaft which goes to the u-joint is rusted together to the flywheel or something.

The engine is hanging on chains, the upper gear unit (almost) disasembled, everything is loosen,...

So, what can I do now? Do I have to cut the bell housing? This would be a pretty big problem since the 280 good condition (I plan to use it further).

Any help would be appreciated.

Damfa
Zagreb, Croatia

Open up the top of your outdrive, and remove the shaft. Inspect and ensure water has not ruined the outdrive.

Then, use a pry bar (or two) to pull the engine forward.

Then, beat the driveshaft out with a sludge hammer. Hopefully the bearing will come out too, if not, you have a project ahead of you.

Finally, purchase a new bearing, remanufactured/new driveshaft (or rebuild yours), gasket sets including orings for the outdrive (after it has been inspected). Then put it back together..

I just went through this thanks to a leaking bellow. However, my bearing did NOT come out of the gimbal, so I replaced the whole housing.

anesthes,

I have to tell you that is painful to even read! Imagine a leaky bellow and some salt water can cause so much damage! Painful & expensive!

We salt water boaters must be insane! :D

I should get my head checked for even OWNING a boat! Hell, its almost July and I've not been out in the water yet, and my ENTIRE powertrain was on the garage floor just a few days ago.

It's funny cuz I switched to I/O from outboards cuz I thought they'd be more reliable.. Right.
