I posted recently about my 89' evinrude 140 having problems. It has good compression but was running rough at lower rpm's until it was pretty unusable at the end of last season. I cleaned the carbs, got it running and ready for the summer, then started going through everything since while much better it still was coughing. At low rpms you can barely notice, but between 1500 and low 2000 range I found a small leak in the gasket between the powerhead and midsection. I just ordered the gaskets for the midsection and things seem pretty straight foward about what to do. My question is what's the best way to remove the powerhead without pulling the flywheel, stator, etc..?
I prefer not to buy the attatchment piece or tools needed to pull the flywheel, the head weighs around 300 lbs though. Any advise on this or tips on redoing the midsection would be appreciated.

You can lift the power head off without removing any parts. There is a place for a lifting eye right behind your flywheel. I'm surprised your motor doesn't have one on it. I use a engine hoist to pull powerheads but it can be done with a couple of guys on a piece of pipe thru a chain hooked to the lifting eye. You power head is much lighter than #300

On a 140 looper you'll need the lifting eye that bolts to the flywheel. That way you're pulling straight up in line with the crank and driveshaft. No need to remove anything.

Ok so I don't have to remove the flywheel, just bolt an eye loop to the top of the flywheel and it will hold the entire engine without damage? What depth is safe to thread the bolts down? I've also been thinking about the exhaust to powerhead gasket replacement. Considering this is were water is leaking from, should I be looking to replace all seals and gaskets in the midsection or is just the powerhead to exhaust gasket sufficient?

It's a fair amount of work,so I would replace any gaskets/seals you disturb.Wouldn't want to do it twice.Might also do the thermostats if they are located "under the bubble".
