I have a '67 johnson 33hp motor. I need to replace the seals. The seal for the drive shaft (under the water pump plate) was easy enough to remove, however, how do you remove the seal from the prop shaft seal retainer? Is there a way to clamp the retainer in place without damaging the housing?

Another question. I look in a repair manual and it says to apply a sealer between the two parts of the gear housing before screwing them together. What kind of sealer would work or should I use?

There are two holes in the seal retainer. Stick a punch through the holes and tap the seal out. At least that is the way it is supposed to work. Rarely does. I stick it in my lathe and cut the seal out. Easy for me to say because I have a lathe.

Scotch 847 is the correct sealant. Usually not available locally and since you probably don't have any you will probably use whatever you have on hand.

I didn't even have a punch. I did some persuading with a hammer and a few nails.

Thanks. I didn't even realize that there were two holes. I'll take a look during the week.
