Hello everybody... Does anyone know if there is a "special" wrench to remove the oil drail hose kit. It has a banjo style swivel fitting, but it is leaking and I cant seem to tighten it. Also what is the correct oil pan drain plug size once I find out how to remove it? 2000 5.0 Mercruiser
Thanks!

Looks like that was a factory setup on that engine. This might help: http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...inbr=2697&bnbr=190&bdesc=Oil+Pan+And+Oil+Pump Looks like it should just unscrew from the bottom of the pan, your local Mercruiser dealer should be able to help you out. Good luck.

If the banjo fitting is leaking and it won't tighten that probably means it's stripped and hopefully it's the screw thats stripped.
The fitting in the pan can be plugged if its stripped(I think)
You might need a pair of vicegrips and a flat screwdriver to remove the screw.
Good luck. J
Sometimes this means a new oil pan. :(

Get a socket or ratchet on the banjo bolt and start turning it counterclockwise.
If it just spins and won't back out try pulling the fitting away from the pan as you turn the bolt. You may be able to get the threads to catch and back out. Hopefully the threads on the banjo bolt are softer than the threads on the oil pan. If they are you might get away with just replacing the banjo bolt or assembly.
On the other hand if the pan threads are bad get an oil pan, don't mess with those temporary plugs.
Sorry to hear of your dilemma, that really stinks.

Ayuh,.... How have you tried to Tighten it, if you don't have a wrench,..??

I don't think the pan drains ever went metric, so it'd be 1/2" fine...

The way I was trying to tighten it was by turning "spinning" the hose itself as it looked like it was just loose. But it just kept turning, I also felt at the fitting above the hose there was a spring loaded push clip, but it made no difference. Yesterday I got in the engine compartment with a mirror and a drop light and could not clearly see a nut to tighten. This should no be this hard to figure out:confused:

Thanks for continuing to help....

try using a digital camera down in the bilge. take a pic pointing randomly at the banjo fitting..

i've found a digital camera real helpful is seeing pieces of my boat that i can't see due to location..

If you get it out and it's the pan that stripped (though you hope it's not), there are semi-permanent, metal plugs to close the pan fitting. You can get one at most auto parts stores. Just bring the old plug with you so you can match the size. It's much cheaper and easier than pulling the engine to change the pan. You'll then have to do your oil changes the way most of us do them - through the dipstick tube. Good luck, and let us know how it works out. Hy

Re: Removing Remote oil Drain Kit M/C 5.0

Took it to the marina yesterday, I had the mechanic remove the kit and replace with a drain plug. However, he thinks a may have a slight leak in the front cover, but couldnt find it with a digital camera and mirrors. So he says it would be best to remove the motor to find it. I think they think boaters have money trees in their back yard.

Thanks for all your help...Rick

ps He esitmates 10 hrs labor @$110..

There's a hex head just behind the banjo fitting this is the one you have to turn to remove the hose.you can get a drain plug and gasket at any auto parts store.check the bottom of the oil pan CAREFULLY this is where they rust out !!!

!00 dollar an hour prices seem high to most. They do not figure in the cost of the building. equipment, license and the techs salary. Major reason most will use an independent tech. If a place of business did not make money they would no longer be a place of business. BOAT Break out another thousand. BOAT= A hole in the water we throw money into desperately trying to fill it up. Hobbies cost and all are pay me now or pay me later.

I think you misunderstood me.......... I think mechanics and businesses deserve to be paid top dollar for their knowledge and expertise... I was only comenting on the fact that they could not find anything leaking but still wanted to pull the motor just to see..... It has benn a few days now and no signs of a leak. No insults were intended.
