removing shift lever from 73' 6hp johnson

I need help,this morning I broke the shift lever off mt 73' 6 hp johnson. do I need to take the engine out and how? :confused:

Hi Dang<br /> Remove fuel lines. remove low speed needle. remove choke knob,rope start handle,kill switch wires. Remove 7 cap screws that attach power haead to exhaust housing (leg). Rock power head back and fourth, lift it of. If you have the piece that broke off, try to have it welded. Unless you can find a used leaver and shaft at a reasonable price. These are usually cheeper to repair than replace. Good luck.
