I have troubleshot down to proving I have a bad start solenoid, removed the 5 cables but can't figure out what holds it on. A trip to my local NAPA store reviewing a typical auto starter for a 1996 Chevy 5.7L engine didn't help. This solenoid doesn't have the two tabs with the small bolts so far as I can feel or see. The space is typical of a marine installation. You can't see 360 degrees and are lucky just to be able to get a flashlight in to see where it is. The boat is a 1996, 20ft Starcraft bowrider with 5.7L, V8 engine and 4 barrel carb. I'd appreciate any feedback. My nearby marine dealer was no assistance and there is a two week waiting line to get them to work on it. Thanks - Charlie Jones cbjones10@aol.com

Charlie.. My experience is that it's best to remove the starter from the engine and replace the soleniod on the workbench...

Thanks snapperbait. You are ever so right. I finally got enough of the back seat, etc. removed to feel what was present. The screw that has to be removed is backed up against the flywheel housing. I wish the marine design engineers were required to remove and replace some of these parts. They may be a little more sympathic to us do-it-yourselfs and mechanics. I figure it is going to take me several days fumbling and screaming to take care of this problem now that I have seen what has to be removed and replaced beside the solenoid.
