I have a leaky seal, and haven't a clue on removing the gear case. I see 4 bolts in front + 1 bolt in the rear on a small block. Don't know what to expect next, or if I should have engine tilted or not ?.... Is the shift rod and drive shaft going to be a surprise? I work in maintenance, but have never changed a plug on an outboard.... "DUH"? 84 Johnson 115hp.

Welcome to iboats.

Honest answer.......I have been working on Johnson/evinrude motors since 1969-70 and I would not try a leaking gearcase repair without having a shop manual on hand. Not a seloc or a clymer but the original shop manual.

I'm not looking to rebuild it, but just look at the inside for any visible damage, and maybe a new impeller.. a manual will happen if there is any.. "Hopefully there's not". thanks.

There are 4 bolts, 2 on each side, 1 in front of the trim tab and another under the trim tab. You will have to disconnect the shift rod under the carbs. Unless the drive shaft is siezed into the crank it will slide right out. I tilt the engine up and put it in forward before I remove the lower unit, that way you can just turn the prop to align the drive shaft splines into the crankshaft.

I agree with Bob_VT, get an OEM Factory Service Manual. It's good for anymore probs you may have on the mtr.

I'll work on that Manual guys..... Your so right that they are great to have around especially with the "common sense" that surrounds us nowadays.. thanks again.

Yup the manual is a good idea...... while you are inside the lower unit ...... you should change the impeller. How "New to You" is the motor? Impeller and lower unit oil are VERY important.

So where is the oil leaking from? Is it black stuff oozing out of the prop? What does the oil smell like? The only oil that might leak out is gearcase 90 weight oil and the smell will give that away.

Re: Removing the gear case on a 84 115 Johnson

I got the 16ft ProCraft 2 weeks ago, and took it to the river just to make sure it ran. (Didn't take it off the trailer. First things first.)Sounded real good but the idle stayed kinda fast and I found the plastic cam style roller in the control box broken. Replaced it and it fixed that problem. The oil is coming out forward of the prop. It is 80/90 type. I'm sure that that seal is gone, but I also know from keeping over 60 different type of vehicles maintained at the asphalt company where I alone keep them all serviced and repaired, "There is ALWAYS a reason a seal starts leaking". Bearing, bushing or whatever.... At a mere $1500, I still think I go a good deal on the setup.. even If I have to "tune up" the lower end.
