Removing the outdrive from 2.3L OMC

Me again,

I downloaded the manual at the top of the page -- but am having a difficult time figuring how much needs to be taken apart to remove the outdrive, and ultimately, the lower unit.

I thought I could remove the 6 bolts or so on the lower, but it apparently needs to come off from the upper part first. Any tips or hints?

2.3's were all coupled to dog clutch Cobras, Bondo. but it is good form to put year/make/model in signature- then every post has the details

it apparently needs to come off from the upper part first.

it does. you can't remove just the lower.
undo the trim rams, remove 6 nuts and pull it off.
shifter in N

1989 VIP VISION Ford 2.3L OMC Clutch dog type drive.

Do I need to pull off the shift linkage on top of the engine first?

I would put this thing in my signature... but I'm hoping it will be in someone else's yard before long.

no- if its in N, the drive will slide out. there's just a flag shaped fork thing that will disengage itself as you pull.

It worked PERFECTLY. Next thing I'm working on removing to put on E-bay is the steering mechanism - Looks like I must need a wheel puller of some sort to get the steering shaft off the outdrive, huh?

I wish mine would slide off!!!!!!!!!!!!! Shift cable frozen or shift linkage in outdrive and can't get the outdrive off! Talked to omc mechanic ,who claims, only way to remove, and if you have to destroy the outdrive, so be it! Tied pry bars for hours! Don't know what to do,,oh any other suggestions,, porta power jaw or a cable and comealong on it ? is all i can think of at this point! thanks
