Removing tilt motor with worm gear

I have an '85 Marlin with a worm drive tilt setup. The solenoids engage but the motor will not. I have removed the two bolts on the motor flange but cannot remove the motor. Do I have to remove the "clutch assembly" and/or "worm gear shaft" to remove the motor? Thanks.

Welcome aboard. are you sure your in the right spot? OMC had the worm drive tilt on the stringer outdrives. Mercruiser had hydraulic in 1985

and the motor comes out from the inside, the worm comes out from the outside under the cover.

Sorry about posting in the wrong spot as this is an OMC setup. I am guessing that the motor should release when the two bolts are removed but this one is not. When I grab the motor, and try to wiggle it loose, it feels pretty solid in place.

Welcome aboard ... to get that motor out you need something cold to drink, some good music, a contortionist and a masseuse :)

I'm not 100% sure on the flange type motors, but there is another through bolt (perhaps two) on the end of the motor. I've always thought those two flange bolts pulled 'em off. BUT they may actually go all the way through and connect with the intermediate housing. Try removing it/them.

You don't need to do anything with the worm gear ... just remove the motor by itself. However, if you do need to remove those through bolts that whole assembly is going to want to come apart on you. So be careful. There is also a spring, and a hammer coupling inside the intermediate that'll want to jump out and go hide in your bilge. You don't want to lose 'em ... so again, be alert.

When I did mine I watched as my small body son squeezed into the space and pull it. It was exhausting I drank 3 beers watching him. LOL
