ok, now im gonna attack the water pump. after my last session i replaced everything except for the water pump and on my last trip out my 63 merc 1000 started smoking and shut down.I have since spun the flywheel to make sure things are still moving and they are.

Question 1: To gain access to the water pump, there is no reason that i would need to remove the power head again is there?

Question 2: To do a compression test should I wait until the impeller is replaced to check compression?

Question 3: For a compression test does the motor need to be running or could i turn the flywheel by hand to do it?

Question 4: Other than internal problems such as compression, could overheating affect any other things such as electrical or ignition that I have already done?

Thanks and any other lower unit or gear housing advise would be greatly appreciated. Im dreading doing this but i think this will be the last main change out befor she runs great. Thanks ya'll - Dunc

Re: removing water pump

Hopefully you didn't hurt the engine, I always add a little extra oil after the pumps fail, I don't know if it helps or just makes m feel better, Yuo must remove the trim tab as there is a bolt under the tab.1 in the front and 2 on each side--Bob

Dunc, I don't understand which 3 bolts your talking about, there are 5 nuts and the bolt under the tab that hold the unit on and 3 nuts and 1 bolt that hold the w/pump houseing on--Bob
