Reniell won't come out of Neutral

Hello,<br /><br />This is my first post, as well as my first boat. I have a 99 Reniell 170 with a Volvo Penta outdrive. This weekend, I dropped the boat in the water. I pushed the button in the middle of the accelerator lever to get boat in neutral. After I started the boat and put the lever in the upright position, the button did not click back out. The lever would move freely without going back into gear. The motor would rev when I moved the lever. Also when I started the boat, it has a belt type chirping noise. The pitch changes with speed of RPM. <br /><br />Any ideas? Could it be the button spring or maybe the cable just slipping and not engaging the transmission?<br /><br />Thanks for the help!<br /><br />Dave<br />

The problem is 99% in the remote control box. The linkage disengages when the button is pressed.<br /><br />The button appearantly does not pop out when in neutral so the thing is to make the button work again. Simple, mechanic error.<br /><br />First try WD40 to clean and oil the thing, if no avail take the box apart. May very well be the spring.<br /><br />The belt chirp can be checked: Try spraying a little plain water on the belt while idling and listen for changes. If it takes the noise away or alters it you've found the source.<br /><br />Cleaning the wheels and tensioner (if any) and a new belt would do.

Hello,<br /><br />Thanks for the reply. Your ideas sound logical. I work in the car business, but boats are a new game for me. I don't want to screw something up and have to rely on going to a boat shop for help. <br /><br />Where can I find info on any recalls on a particular boat? Link on bottom of this site to (motor-)manuals.<br /><br />The remote box isn't that hard to fix. If the WD40 trick does not work, bolt if off and take it apart. Keep an eye on where bits and pieces are located and you should be able to assemble it no worries.<br /><br />If the box itself is broken you have to know your specific motor and lower unit model to get another that will fit the cables etc.
