I'm looking to take apart my lower unit
on my 1977 Mercruiser Stern drive. I'm not sure if I'm going to rebuild it or just buy
a rebuilt or used one. I hate to buy to tools
just for one rebuild. Does anyone know
Where can one rent the special tools necessary?

I've done a quick search and I've come up with nothing.

Thanks,

Jim

Re: Renting rebuild tools

Renting the types of tools that you're on the look out for is probably near impossible, particularly your geographic region. It's probably easier to buy used tools then resell if you want to recoup your investment. Check eBay, marina's on the coast, advertise "wanted" or check areas where alot of boating activity occurs. I'm familiar with the Lakes Region of New Hampshire (100 or so miles from you) there are zillions of self proclaimed marine mechanics, repair facilities, abandoned tools of all sorts, and "people who know people". Try on-line searches in those types of places. Or search 'New Hampshire, Mercruiser tools'...I got a lot of "hits".

Thanks for the replies.
I did a small search on e-bay last night
and saw a couple things. I may suck it
up and buy some of them. I think you guys are
right, I'll be able to sell them on e-bay
or on this or some other forum.

I'm tempted, however, just to get a used one from e-bay and not bother with it. It would drive my nuts, though, to not take apart the old old and
see if I was right about the worn shift spool!

Jim
