I have a 64 horse trailer, which may never had the bearings repacked and a 97 Ford Ranger, that need the rotors turned, so I will need to remove the hubs.

The Ford axle nut is supposed to be torqued to a certain inch pounds.

It seems in the old days, I simply tightened the nuts to kinda snug with a wrench, loosened the nut and then hand tightened. Never had any problems with other axles.

Is there a better way and if I need a in/lb torque wrench, does anyone know wherer to get an inexpensive one?

Thanks for any input.

I've always done it as you described and never had a problem. Spin the wheel while tightening till it wants to stop pretty quickly and then back off till the cotterpin fits the keyway.

I gotta ask- Did you mean a 16 foot 4 horse trailer instead of a 64 horse? Thats gotta be a huge trailer.

Thanks for the input. It's a 1964 horse trailer. Probably spent most of it's life setting outside.

Adjust the torque with the wheel/tire assembly mounted, as you have always done.

Trying to get the torque right with just the rotor mounted leaves the assembly loose.
