Repainting Alum. Boat. Primer needed?

I did a lot of reading. But never really got a straight answer. Probably still wont.

But I figure I would paint the boat, since I can never leave things alone.
Overall the paint is "fair". Lots of scratches, etc. But theres still a lot of paint there.
I planned on using rustoleum then finishing up with a clear coat (i need it for doing some flake)

I have read just scuff the old stuff and go at it.

Others say, prime the whole thing.

The paint is still good, but theres exposed aluminum on the scratches. so thats where Im unsure.

Flake rustoleum? Not. Sure how you will do that. All bare aluminum should be primed with selfetching primer. Rest of, the boat should be primed with bare metal primer even if the other paint is well stuck. The primer aids with the adhesion of the new paint.

im doing a base of color with rustoleum. then adding flake to the clear

also, can I just use self etching on the whole thing? Or grab a rattle can of self etching, do all the bare spots, then go over the rest with normal primer?

Personally I would spot Alumiprep and Alodine .. then spot prime ( with the same primer that your going to full prime with ) .. then full prime.

I did a sticky with pics up there at the top of the boating and resto forum .
