Well since my engine looks brandy-new now I want to repaint my outdrive before I drop the boat into the water. It's an 88 OMC cobra, with chipping paint. Three questions:

1. What's the best way to remove the old paint? I have a powerwasher, is there a stripper I can apply and then powerwash off? (onto a tarp which will catch all the crap).

2. Do I need a primer, and if so, what?

3. What paint do I use?

Thanks!

Re: Repainting an Outdrive

It is tough to get all the paint off.Use automotive stripper if chemical is your choice.I paid someone to sandblast.Use Zinc primer. Most recommend zinc chromate but I have had better results with zinc phosphate. If you want a perfect finish for the topcoat then lightly wet sand the primer when done. You should apply 2-3 coats of primer.Try to find the topcoat in laquer.some of the tempo paints for outdrive are enamel. The laquer will last better when applied correctly.Charlie
