I'm trying to set ignition timing on my 1973 65hp Evinrude (model 65373R S/N J0019398).
My repair manual (SELOC) states the following:

(In the procedure section) "pickup timing is 2 degrees ATDC to TDC" & "maximum advance is 18-20 degrees BTDC"

(In the tune up spec. section at back of manual)
pickup timing is 8 degrees BTDC & maximum advance is 26 degrees BTDC.

Also, manual shows aligning the cam follower roller w/ the "short" mark on the throttle cam. My engine has one line and it is not "short".

I'm well versed in automotive tune up but this misleading info. has me a tad confused.

Any Evinrude tech masters out there...........

Yo Rod Holder,
I'm not a 'rude tech of any kind but I've got a better manual than your Seloc.
Have you established TDC yet?

c/6

Hooty

Hey Hoot,
For now, I'm assuming the pointer is within 2 degrees of TDC. How about some numbers from that butt kickin' manual of yours..

( I think SELOC is made by the fine folks at Chilton)...........

Both Chilton & Evinrude manuals have a procedure for finding TDC. After you're sure of that, use a timing light and advance the warm-up lever until timing is 8 deg.BTDC, That's pick-up timing. Do your link & sync and then set final full advanced timing at 22 deg. BTDC.

g'luck & c/6

Hooty

Thanks Hooty,
As an end result, will your sequence give 8 degrees BTDC at idle speed in gear (FWD) ?

Idle speed in gear is how my manual relates to pickup timing.

Does the term "pickup timing" mean the amount of advance needed to accelerate from low speed ?

Were you far enough west to avoid the storm a few days ago (I foregot what she was named) ???

Idle adj. is made in the water and in gear. The Clymer manual sez to adj. the idle on the 65hp. in reverse, 650RPM. Link and sync adj. are made on the hose and in neutral.

c/6

Hooty

I know excactly what you mean my merc manuel for my 73 merv 85hp manuel is same way. i final called a frien in the city who works on them and he told me the best way to set timing pickup and full is doing it with timing light while cranking engine not running. pickup timing is when you at idle in forward gear. just hook jumper on starter to bypass net. switch set throttle at idle forward and crank motor while reading light. then move throttle to wide open and crank while reading light. it worked great for me and it was 10 times easier than the manuel sincing carbs is a breeze after timing is set.

If you set full advance with mikebob's method, you better set it 2-3 deg.'s below spec. In other words, full advance should be set at 19-20 deg.'s BTDC.

c/6

Hooty
