Repairing a bait casting net?

I bought this bait casting net yesterday morning at a yard sale and really didn't notice that it has 2 rips in it. Right now I'm trying to use fishing line to repair the rips, I only have 8lb test, my heavier test line is out of town.

Have any of you guys tried fixing these things?
If doubled up do you think 8lb test would hold the rip together or should I go with heavier test line on top of that?
How wold a manage to put a loop back around the top so I can tie a rop back to it? I would need some heavy test line for sure to make this loop strong enough I would think.

I know it sounds funny, your probably asking why don't you go buy a new one. Well I thought I would salvage this one if at all possible I should have gotten it for free if I only new at the time that it had 2 rips in it and the loop was missing but I ended up paying a $1 for it . I honestly can't remember what a new one cost but I can't afford it right now anyway. Guess I paid to much attention to the old trolling motor that I bought.

Re: Repairing a bait casting net?

Repairing one correctly takes special hand tools (same ones used to make nets) and skills that are almost forgotten. It's hard to even notice the repair when it's done right.

My grandad made his own cast nets and repaired his own nets on the shrimp boats. He made it look easy. I learned a lot of things from him, but I never did learn that skill.

You can probably do something that works with some mono line. I think there are still net making/repair books around if you search. Most would rather just replace those mono bait cast nets.

Re: Repairing a bait casting net?

Thanks for the replies guys. I386 I know it had to take allot of patience and work for your grandfather to build his own nets and even repair them. Funny thing was my mother asked me if I ever thought about making one, I have thought about it.

I think I got it fixed. I used 8lb test on the rips after all, if it rips again I will use something heavier. I finally got my fishing tackle back today, so I used the 12lb test line for the loops to tie the rope to, I believe out of all of the repairs I think the loop will hold up. I am eager to try it out tomorrow at the uncle's pond out back for a test run. Really I need to learn the casting techniques. I have watched other's use them but I have never used one. My cousin got a hold of a 20lb carp (give or take a few) during the last holiday weekend, he thought he was hung up but he wasn't after all. I will be using it for shad most likely.

Re: Repairing a bait casting net?

The small mono bait cast nets are pretty easy to throw. The 6' and bigger ones take a little more practice. There's more than one way to do it. How I was taught was to loop the rope on my left wrist. Then coil the rope and a couple feet of net in my left hand. While holding onto that, reach down with the right hand, grab a lead and put it in your teeth (no I'm not kidding). Then reach down with the right hand and grab some more lead (counter clockwise from the one in your teeth). Then just twist your body to the left for the wind up and spin back to the right for the release. Don't forget to let go of the lead in your mouth. Let it sink for a bit and start hauling it in. As you haul it in you're coiling the rope and net in the left hand again (unless you have fish!).

You just want to throw a wide perfect circle. You don't have to put the lead in your mouth but it does help.:p

:D, I'm glad I didn't stick any of the net in my mouth earlier when I was trying it out on the pond out back just a few minutes ago. I had gobs of vegetation in the net. Practice practice practice, I'll learn or I'll go down trying lol, my cousin makes it look so easy. I only threw 2 decent casts out of 13 or more, the other attempts sucked I couldn't reinact those other 2. I'll try your directions the next time I'm out with it.

Thanks :).
