I have some minor hairline cracks in a aluminum transom cap. Would it be best to have them welded, or, can i use an epoxy? Any other ideas? Thanks, Bob

Usually these part are structural parts. Weld it....tell the weldor to use 4043 for this particular application. The base metal needs to be groved on both sides till paper thin in the middle. Pre heat to about 400 degrees and TIG WELD ONLY. Going rate is $55.00 per hour. Sand off with 60 rit grinding disc then finish grind with 180 grit. DO NOT LET HIM WELD OVER THE TOP, IT WILL BREAK AGAIN, MUST BE GROVED BEFORE WELDING.

I also think that welding it would be the most permament solution. You may want to check your transom also to make sure it is sound. Flex in the transome could have caused the cracks in the aluminum.

Just a thought.

Jason

Perhaps i should be more specific, the cracks in the transom cap appear to be the result of impact, as the cap, or top moulding, is dented. Probably backed it into a piling while launching the boat. Bob

'Mornin' Motownbob,

just a thought. How about having a machine shop, fab a new one for you. Would likely be less expensive the repping the old one.

You've probably got to move the engine and remove the old piece any way. Just take it to a machine shop and ask their opinion. Repair or replace?

Good Luck with her
