Repairing storage compartments?

Hello All,

This is my first iboats forums post. I've been using the boards as a search reference for quite a while now though, and I appreciate the wealth of information available!

I was hoping someone could help me out. I recently purchased an old (late 70's) bass boat, and am doing a semi-restoration on it. One of the problems I'm having is in repairing the storage containers and livewell at the back of the boat. These may be fiberglass, but I actually think they are plastic containers. They cannot be removed without removing the entire cap of the boat, which I am not going to do.

All of these compartments have cracks, holes and broken sections in them. The previous owner used some fiberglass to do quick repairs on some of these spots, but it looks absolutely terrible, and was done poorly. I have no problem re-glassing these compartments, and sanding them so they are smooth, but I cannot figure out what I can use to re-coat the insides so they look half-decent? I would try using just white paint, but spraying evenly into these compartments while inside the boat is going to be next to impossible, I can just feel it.

Perhaps I could use a white spray-on bedliner (for everything but the livewell anyways, since I'm guessing it wouldn't hold up well to the water?). Is there any type plastic-like spray that's liquid on application and dries to a durable solid? (And also coats evenly on vertical applications!?)

Any help that can be provided is most definitely appreciated! There will be many more questions to come shortly!

Re: Repairing storage compartments?

hi. welcome to iboats ! :)

after you fiberglass them, i would gellcoat them.

(actually thats my answer to everything :D )

gellcoat is exactly what you asked for. it does not come in a spray can, but it can be painted on and finished to your liking.

if you do have the spray equipment, and the room to move the gun around...pro results are a few hours away.

cheers
