reparing cavitation plate

I have a section broken out on my cavitation plate, (Alpha II Drive). Does the lower unit need to be removed in order to be welded safely, or can it be repaired in place with out causing heat damage to the internal components?

Ayuh,........ Like My olbuddyjack says,... Bring to a Prop Shop,.... They'll tell you.....

Most of the Cav. plate is a considerable distance from Anything that'll be Heat Sensitive.....

And, Welding Aluminum. the heat doesn't Travel like some other metals........Just a Wet Rag can be used as a Heat Dam......

Welding should be fine...if you're not sure you can try the JB Weld fix. I used JB Weld to repair a 3" junk broken off my Alpha One cav plate. Cleaned both parts, mixed the compound, applied to the parts, held it in place with tape and hand clamps, sanded and painted...voila. Three years later, still in place, no problem. JB Weld small kit - $6.00
