Replace carpet with non-slip paint product?

I have an old fiberglass 16" boat that needs new carpet. My wife came up with the idea of using one of those non-slip paint products commonly used on steps and floors. Some are epoxy-based, colored, and seem to contain a sand-like compound. Aside from appearance issues, is there any reason why not to use somehting like that? anything commercially available specifically for boats?

The best replacement for carpets is stuff like truck bedliner, Andy.

It is now made in many colors and can be slip-proofed.

Theres this interlux non skid stuff that I have heard works well. try typing it into google i think theres some links that come up.

I use a plastic enamel from the local hardware store. The stuff is bullet proof. Just add grit. You can tint it as well. Usually the store employees say you can't tint the stuff. I get around that by just saying I will buy the can whether the tinting works or not. I have used epifanes non skid floor paint and it is too soft and scuffs easily. I do not know about interlux, but I think it is the same type of one part paint as the epifanes
The plastic enamel I am talking about is usually only stocked in white. i used it in my bilge as well and doesn't mark even with dropped tools and wipes clean very easily.

I used garage floor two part epoxy, with multi-colored plastic bits you sprinkle in the finish. I really like it; was purchased at Home Depot.

Durabak is a moisture cured polyurethane designed initially for the commercial marine industry it can be ordered smooth or with granulized rubber with a UV enhancement.Goes on at around 30 mil with 2 coats and is very very tough if the prep is proper.My findings with coatings are that if it came from the marine industry it will live a full life.

X2. it doesnt hold water, and you can add the sand/grit to it if you want a little texture.

I don't like the idea of carpet holding water but I would also like to be bare foot on my boat and it seems that all these coatings would be hot out in the sun. What about carpet that is cut to fit but not adheared to the boat. When you are done for the day just roll it up and store it. When you get home unroll it and let it dry then roll it up until the next time you go out.

The plastic enamel I am talking about is:
Beauti-tone Liquid Plastic Enamel;
Use: For interior or exterior use.....marine use above the waterline....
From Home Hardware in Canada.
I am sure there is a similar product in the U.S.

You could cut some carpet, have a nice edge sewn into it, add some snaps and snap it to the floor and then unsnap and store/dry when you don't want it in the boat...lots of newer boats have this ( glastron comes to mind ).
