Replace external exhaust flapper with internal exhaust bellows flapper?

I have a AQ275 outdrive with the external exhaust flapper that is missing. I am getting water in my bilge while sitting and wound like to change the U-Joint bellows and exhaust bellows in an attempt to resolve the leak. My current setup had the external exhaust flapper located on the drive trim tab. The flapper has been discontinued according to other threads in the forum. The Volvo Penta Exhaust Bellows Part Number for my drive is 875848 without flapper but I would like to use the 875828 with flapper. Will this work?

I have attached a picture from eBay on what my exhaust outlet should look like but mine does not have the flapper. Also attached is the exhaust bellows with flapper.

Flappers in either place are to keep water out of the engine - not out of the bilge.

Changing the bellows probably won't stop the leak.
One place to look is at the bottom of the exhaust down tube.
There is an O-ring(actually5 o-rings) at the bottom and sometimes the screws holding the tube back out.
Or the transom plate's leaking.
Get a mirror and a flash light and start looking.

Re: Replace external exhaust flapper with internal exhaust bellows flapper?

Last year was my first year boating and as you can see I have a lot to learn. I will attempt to locate the leak in the spring as my boat is in winter storage. Still wondering if I should use the exhaust bellows with flapper to keep the water out of the engine or should I purchase the trim tab with flapper from eBay and use the recommended exhaust bellows with no flapper? Is the bellows with flapper compatible? Thanks in advance for all your help!

Some guys have made replacement rubber flappers and installed them in the factory spot.

If you're gonna buy a used one it wouldn't hurt to try replacing the rubber on the one you've got first.

Drill the rivets out of the old one, fab a new one out of a tire patch or rubber gasket material and use small stainless nuts/bolts to put it back together - make sure nothing protrudes above the casting. I made a thicker reinforcing plate and tapped it to take machine screws. The way it goes together is nice, because the way it bends encourages the flap to stay closed.

The pic shows I tried making one out of conveyer belt, but the belt was too thick/stiff, so I think I ended up with rubber gasket material?...which was a little flimsy so I used the fender washer to stiffen it up.

The flap gets pushed back onto a lip under pressure, so you don't need to worry about a perfect seal.

If you trailer your boat, keep an eye on the new flap to see how it holds up. If you're not handy or worry a lot - by all means get a functional replacement. My replacement flap has been doing fine for over a year and if/when it goes, I can put another one on in a snap.

Thanks for the info especially the pictures. Looking for the rubber material. I'm going to try and make my own and use the stock exhaust bellows.

post a picture of the back of the boat. Your leak may be some long screws in; trim tabs, swim platform, other stuff.

I used the sidewall of a cheap radial tire to replace the flapper.
Also use stainless rivets.
It's amazing how soft and flexible the sidewalls are.
I know as a month ago I hit a stick in the yard and poked a hole in the side wall.$175 new tire :(
