Has anyone replaced the stringers that hold the motor mount for a Mercruiser 228 chevy V8. The old ones have just a fiberglass cacoon. I have pulled the motor. Does that have to be replaced all the way to the front of the boat or just in the back? Any pictures would help. Any advise?

Thanks

If your stringers are not rotten all the way up simple splice in to them and replace the bad area, if the damage goes farther to the front it should be repaired, it's more than a mount it's the main stiffener for the whole hull

Some pictures would help out alot. That fiberglass cocoon most likely encased some type of wood at one time. Wether or not it goes all the way to the bow, it depends on how the boat is built.

Mine was that way, just thick fiberglass, formed around some ply wood. I made a new engine cradle out of some ply wood, four feet long about a foot longer then what manufacture did, and five inches thick. With some 3 inch high bump ups for the mount to bolt to.

I saw some one mention that they made a new cradle by placing glass and epoxy over a 4x4 covered in wax paper.

There some pics on the link below that will show my new mounts, warning though there are a lot of pics.

http://photos.yahoo.com/qaztoo
