I have a pair of 1989 130 hp yamahas. after reading many post here I have decided to keep the oil injection. everthing seems to work fine. should I change the oil pumps due to age? also other than cleaning the tanks and filters what maintenence should I do. I will take this boat offshore 30 to 40 miles and do not want any problems.

Re: replace oil pump?

I install new oil pumps(on engine) every 1000 hrs. of service and clean oil tank boat every year and inspect or replace oil filter tank every year too.

Re: replace oil pump?

hello
keeping clean filters is a must. there is a filter at the remote tank and a strainer in the engine tank. if you remove the engine tank strainer make sure you line up the strainer vent hole on the rubber flat. make sure you retrive the old rubber seal from the tank if it fell off the strainer and make sure you use a new seal. I drain the tank before removing the strainer so trash does not fall into the pump intake line. drain the water trap tube every 100 hours or every 6 months. make sure you carry spare plastic clips that clip the oil link rod to the pump. they break sometimes.
and be familiar with how to manually turn the pump on and off. the pump control modules sometimes fail and start overfilling the engine tank and venting the oil into the airbox. if that happens disconnect the tank connector and run for 30 min at a time. good luck and keep posting. PS someplace posted here is a relly good trouble shooting guide.

Re: replace oil pump?

hello
the water trap is the long vynil tube that is held on by a tie strap hanging from the front bottom of the engine oil tank. the tank also has a screen. the remote tank has an inline filter on that tank just before the transfer pump. to remove the water trap cut the tie strap. if the tube is rock hard I use a small mini torch and carefully heat it. a hair dryer would probably work just as well and be safer for the untrained. so remove the tube and shake the mud and such out of it. this is also an opretune time to test the no oil alarms and the tank transfer rate. turn the key switch on while draining the tank into a cut off milk jug and wait until the alarm sounds. if it sounds at the roper level then replace the tube. then from the alarm level to cut transfer pump cut off should be less than 180 sec. if its longer remote tank filter service is mandatory.
good luck and keep posting
